Here is a breakdown of the different options when it comes to choosing the best fragrance to suit your style and your needs.

Aftershave

Aftershaves are the weakest type of fragrance, containing 1-2% perfume oil at most. However, many are combined with ingredients such as aloe vera to help heal the skin. While the scents only last 2-3 hours, the right ingredients may be beneficial for men who shave on a regular basis.

Eau Fraiche

This is the most diluted type of fragrance, containing approximately 1-3% perfume oils. Eau Fraiche normally lasts for less than 1 hour once applied. Being more diluted, Eau Fraiche will generally have a lower price tag compared with other types of fragrance.

Cologne

It is not uncommon to hear the word ‘cologne’ used interchangeably with ‘men’s fragrance.’ However, cologne also refers to a specific type of fragrance, usually containing 2-4% perfume oils. Cologne for men tends to be more popular among younger age brackets and is often made up of essential oils from fruits such as lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot.

Cologne usually lasts for approximately 2 hours.

This type of fragrance has a widely-loved history. The first cologne was created in the 1600s by Italian perfumer Giovanni Maria Farina. Living in Germany and feeling homesick, he based the scent off the Italian spring in his hometown, Santa Maria Maggiore Valle Vigezzo.

Eau de Toilette

With a concentration of 5-15% pure perfume essence dissolved in alcohol, Eau de Toilette is usually applied directly to the skin after showering. This type of fragrance usually lasts between 1 and 3 hours.

Eu de Parfum

One of the most common types of fragrance, Eu de Parfum, contains the second-highest concentration of perfume oils at 15-20%. It lasts between 5-8 hours, making it ideal for anyone wanting to make a good impression at work, at an all-day social occasion, or on a night out.

Eu de Parfum is often found to be better on sensitive skin compared with other types of fragrances.

Perfume

Of all the fragrance options, perfume is the most concentrated form and is, therefore, the most expensive. Perfume is usually made u of 20-40%  pure perfume essence. While many may be put off by the price of a perfume, it is worth taking into account that the higher the concentration, the less you will need to re-apply.

After applying once, perfume can last up to 24 hours.
